7 Basic Steps to Successful Fasting & Prayer

“7 Basic Steps to Successful Fasting & Prayer” (Dr. Bill Bright)

1.    Set your objective
a.    Why are you fasting?
i.    Renewal, guidance, healing, problems, etc.

2.    Make your commitment (ahead of time)
a.    How long?
b.    What type?
c.    Activities to restrict?
d.    Time each day for prayer/Word

3.    Prepare yourself spiritually
a.    Ask God to help you make a list
b.    Confess your sins (I John 1:9)
c.    Seek forgiveness from others (Mark 11:25, Luke 11:4)
d.    Make restitution
e.    Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit (I John 5:14,15)
f.    Surrender fully to Him (Romans 12:1,2)
g.    Meditate on His attributes (Psalm 48:9,10; 103:1-8)
h.    Begin with an expectant heart (Hebrews 11:6)
i.    Realize Satan’s opposition (Galatians 5:16,17)

4.    Prepare yourself physically
a.    Consult a doctor first
b.    Don’t rush into it
c.    Eat smaller meals before a fast (ease your way into it)
d.    Avoid high fat and sugary foods
e.    Eat raw fruits/vegetables two days before a fast

5.    Put yourself on a schedule
a.    Morning
i.    Begin with praise and worship
ii.    Read/meditate on God’s Word
iii.    Invite Holy Spirit to do His work (Philippians 2:13)
iv.    Invite God to use you (your world
v.    Pray for His vision in your life (where do I fit in?)
b.    Afternoon
i.    Prayer/God’s Word
ii.    Short prayer walk
iii.    Intercessory prayer – community, nation, the unreached
c.    Evening
i.    seek His face (alone)
ii.    avoid TV or other distractions
d.    Dietary routine
i.    5-8am – freshly squeezed or blended/diluted fruit juice
1.    apple, pear, grapefruit, papaya, watermelon
2.    do  your own juicing
ii.    10:30-noon
1.    fresh juice – lettuce, celery, carrots together
iii.    2:30-4:00pm
1.    herb tea with drop of honey.  No caffeine
iv.    6:00-8:30pm
1.    broth from boiled potatoes, celery, carrots – no salt

6.    End your fast gradually
a.    Break it with fruit (watermelon) and continue throughout
i.    First day – add a raw salad
ii.    Second day – add baked/boiled potato – no butter/seasoning
iii.    Third day – add a steamed vegetable
iv.    After – begin to reintroduce your normal diet

7.    Expect results
